Day 1 on the Space Systems Engineer path.

What a Space Systems Engineer does

Plans and connects spacecraft parts so teams build a space system that meets mission needs and passes testing.

  • Define mission needs and turn them into clear system requirements
  • Manage interfaces between subsystems like power, thermal, avionics, and structures
  • Build system budgets for mass, power, data rate, and performance margins
  • Run trade studies to compare design options and choose a balanced solution
  • Plan verification and validation tests to prove requirements are met
  • Coordinate reviews, track risks, and resolve cross-team technical issues
  • Maintain system documentation, change control, and configuration baselines

A day in the life

  1. Review open risks, requirement changes, and interface questions from teams
  2. Join subsystem standups to unblock issues and align on next tests
  3. Update requirement traces and verification plans after design decisions
  4. Prepare for design reviews by checking budgets, margins, and open actions

Ways in

There is more than one route.

Ways to study

  • Bachelors degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or similar
  • Masters degree focused on space systems, systems engineering, or mission design
  • Systems engineering certificate or short course with a capstone project
  • Military or industry technical training in avionics, satellites, or test operations

How people get their first job

  • Apply for spacecraft or satellite engineering internships and co-op placements
  • Start in a subsystem role and take ownership of interface and requirement tasks
  • Join a student rocketry or CubeSat team and document requirements and tests
  • Build a small portfolio showing trade studies, budgets, and verification plans
  • Earn a systems engineering fundamentals certificate and practice on a sample project
