Day 1 on the Forensic Accountant path.

What a Forensic Accountant does

Examine financial records to find fraud, theft, or hidden money, then explain what happened in plain terms. The work often supports court cases, regulator probes, or insurance disputes, and the credentials needed vary by country.

  • Trace transactions across accounts to find money that was moved or hidden
  • Reconstruct records from incomplete books, emails, and bank statements
  • Quantify losses from fraud, theft, or breach of contract
  • Interview staff and suspects to test explanations against the evidence
  • Search large data sets for unusual patterns, round numbers, and duplicate payments
  • Document each step so findings hold up under legal challenge
  • Write reports and exhibits that lawyers and judges can follow
  • Give expert evidence in court or in settlement meetings when asked

A day in the life

  1. Review the case file, then list the records and accounts to chase
  2. Pull bank data and ledgers, then trace suspicious payments step by step
  3. Interview a manager to clarify approvals and missing receipts
  4. Build a timeline and loss estimate, noting evidence for each claim
  5. Draft a section of the report and discuss findings with the lead lawyer
