What a Financial Analyst does

Analyzes financial data and budgets to help leaders plan, track performance, and make better investment decisions.

  • Analyze revenue, costs, and cash flow to explain business performance
  • Build financial models to forecast results and test what-if scenarios
  • Prepare monthly reports and dashboards for leaders and partners
  • Support budgeting by gathering inputs and checking assumptions
  • Evaluate projects and investments using ROI, NPV, and payback methods
  • Track key metrics and flag risks, gaps, and unusual trends
  • Coordinate with accounting to reconcile actuals and improve data quality

A day in the life

  1. Review latest results, update trackers, and note any big variances
  2. Meet with teams to clarify drivers behind changes in costs or sales
  3. Build or refine a forecast model and run what-if scenarios
  4. Write a short summary for leaders with insights and next steps
  5. Answer ad hoc questions and prepare slides for a review meeting
