Day 1 on the iOS Developer path.

What a iOS Developer does

Builds and improves apps for iPhone and iPad so users get fast, polished screens that follow Apple's design and App Store rules. Focuses on one platform in depth, unlike a general mobile developer who splits time across both Apple and Android devices.

  • Build app screens and flows with SwiftUI, Apple's modern user interface (UI) toolkit
  • Write features in Swift using the iOS software development kit (SDK)
  • Connect apps to web services and local storage to load and save data
  • Test on many iPhone and iPad models and screen sizes to catch crashes and bugs
  • Profile memory, battery, and start-up time to keep the app smooth
  • Configure build settings, code signing, and version numbers for releases
  • Submit and update builds through App Store Connect and read crash reports
  • Work with designers and product teammates to plan and estimate features

A day in the life

  1. Check messages and crash reports, then plan a small set of tasks
  2. Build a feature in Xcode and run it on the iOS simulator
  3. Test the same screen on several real devices to spot layout issues
  4. Join a short team sync to unblock work and confirm requirements
  5. Review a teammate code change and update yours from the feedback
  6. Prepare a signed build and ship a beta through TestFlight
