Day 1 on the Cinematographer path.

What a Cinematographer does

Owns the look of a film, show, or commercial, deciding how light, color, lenses, and camera moves tell the story. Works as the Director of Photography (DP), leading the camera and lighting crew and partnering closely with the director.

  • Read the script and agree the visual style with the director
  • Choose cameras, lenses, and lighting to set mood and tone
  • Plan each shot's framing, movement, and angle before the shoot
  • Lead the camera and lighting crew and assign each person tasks
  • Set exposure, focus, and color on set so footage matches the plan
  • Solve light, weather, and location problems without losing the look
  • Guide color grading later so the final film keeps the intended style

A day in the life

  1. Review the script, shot list, and the day's lighting plan with the director
  2. Brief the camera and lighting crew, then set up gear and test looks
  3. Light each scene, line up shots, and call adjustments during takes
  4. Check monitors for exposure and color, then approve or reshoot takes
  5. Wrap the set, review footage, and plan lighting for the next day
