Day 1 on the Operations Research Analyst path.

What a Operations Research Analyst does

Uses math models and data to help teams choose better plans for staffing, routing, and budgets with less cost and risk.

  • Analyze business problems and define goals, limits, and success measures
  • Build optimization models for schedules, routes, inventory, or capacity
  • Run simulations to compare options under different demand and constraints
  • Collect and clean data from systems, spreadsheets, and interviews
  • Test model results against real outcomes and adjust assumptions
  • Explain tradeoffs and recommendations to non-technical stakeholders
  • Create dashboards and reports to track impact after changes are made

A day in the life

  1. Meet with planners to clarify constraints like staff rules, service levels, and costs
  2. Pull data, check quality, and prepare inputs for models and scenarios
  3. Build and run optimization or simulation, then review results for realism
  4. Share findings, answer questions, and agree on next experiments or rollout steps
