Day 1 on the Data Architect path.

What a Data Architect does

Designs the blueprint for how an organization stores, connects, and protects data so teams can use it reliably in products and decisions.

  • Design data models and standards for key business areas
  • Map data flows between apps, databases, and analytics tools
  • Define data rules like naming, ownership, and access levels
  • Review new projects to ensure they fit the data architecture
  • Partner with engineers to choose storage and integration patterns
  • Diagnose data issues caused by poor structure or unclear definitions
  • Document architecture decisions and keep diagrams up to date
  • Teach teams how to use shared data definitions and patterns

A day in the life

  1. Meet with product and engineering to clarify data needs and constraints
  2. Review a proposed schema change and flag risks to reporting or privacy
  3. Update diagrams and write guidance for a new data domain
  4. Join a design review to align on integration and data ownership

Tools you will use

Databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL ServerData modeling: ER diagrams, dimensional modelingData integration: ETL, ELT, APIsCloud data platforms: AWS, Azure, Google CloudCatalog and governance: data dictionary, lineage mappingDiagramming: Lucidchart, draw.ioQuerying: SQLVersion control: Git
